Welcome to Community Housing Associates (CHA)!

Established in 1989, Community Housing Associates (CHA) is a dedicated housing development organization, driven by a vision of creating affordable housing solutions for individuals and families with mental illness. Our mission has always been to provide safe, supportive, and affordable housing opportunities to those who need it most.

CHA's inception was made possible through collaboration with the Baltimore Mental Health Systems (BMHS), a public coordinating agency for mental health services in the City of Baltimore. With the generous support of a major five-year grant from the Robert Woods Johnson Foundation, we embarked on a journey that would span over two decades, impacting the lives of countless individuals.

Over the past twenty years, CHA has demonstrated a strong commitment to our community, making significant strides in the development, management, and leasing of housing options tailored to the unique needs of individuals and families affected by mental illness. We have successfully employed a diverse range of public and private financing sources to realize our mission.

Our Accomplishments:

  1. Rental Housing Development: CHA has proudly developed eighty-seven units of rental housing, carefully designed to meet the specific needs of our residents. These units offer a safe and stable environment for individuals striving to rebuild their lives.
  2. Leased Housing: In addition to our owned units, CHA leases an additional 140 units from private landlords, extending our reach and impact in the community. We work closely with these landlords to maintain high-quality living standards for our residents.
  3. Ongoing Renovations: CHA is committed to continuous improvement. Currently, we have seventeen units in the renovation process, ensuring that our housing options remain safe, comfortable, and modern for those we serve.
Our Target Population:

At CHA, we recognize the unique financial challenges faced by individuals with mental illness. Therefore, we are dedicated to serving those with very low incomes, specifically in the 0-30% of the area median income range. We believe that everyone deserves a stable and affordable place to call home, and our creative use of resources has allowed us to ensure that no individual pays more than 30% of their income for housing.

In conclusion, CHA remains steadfast in its commitment to providing compassionate and affordable housing solutions for individuals and families affected by mental illness. With a rich history of accomplishment and a strong vision for the future, we invite you to join us on our mission to create thriving communities and support those in need.
